Car History:

The 170 V model from Mercedes-Benz was launched in 1936 at cars expo show in Berlin. This was replacing the 170 model and instead of six cylinders engine it was endowed with M136 engine with only four cylinders. It was the only model built by Mercedes-Benz before the war whose production continued after the war. The Mercedes-Benz 170 V replaced the 170 model after five years of production. For the same cylindrical capacity, the 170 V model was more modern technically and stylistically and still more inexpensive then its predecessor.

The “V” letter (from German word “vorn” – front) was used to make the difference – not between the new model and its predecessor – but between the 170 H model (from the German word “Heck”- rear) launched by Mercedes-Benz about the same time and the 130 model. The 170 H model was the successor of the 130 model launched two years before. The 130 model was the first car Mercedes-Benz built with rear engine. The 170 V model developed a power of 28 kW at 3400 rpm. The 1,7 l engine with four cylinders had a consumption of less then 10 liters and a rotating point of 100 Newtonmeters at 1800 rotations. The maximum speed reached 108 km/h. The engine – caught in two points – was extremely quiet for a four cylinders engine. The transmission with four steps had at the beginning only the two upper steps synchronized, but after 1940 all velocity steps were synchronized.

Even from the 1946 the Mercedes-Benz had started to offer the 170 V model. This model was identical with the same offered before the war. Untill 1947 we can not speak about a passenger car in the complete meaning of this word. There were more likely utility cars with two seats and a wood bench on the back. A postwar building was the engine from 170 D model, which was used in production in May 1949. The 170 Va/Da versions were launched a year later, with an increased capacity, an improved transmission and well finished endowments.Since 1953, the abbreviation 170 Vb/Db was showing optimized versions with rear enlarged wheel base and with a larger windshield. Among the rare differential models, we can talk about the Combi versions modified by the Mercedes-Benz distributor Lueg from Bochum and the Cabriolet serial with 4 doors, built on 170 Da characteristics, which were delivered by Mercedes for the border police.
